The Hidden Miracle of Kounistra
A Story That Begins With a Swaying Light
According to tradition, sometime in the mid-17th century, an icon of the Virgin Mary was discovered hanging — gently swaying — from a pine tree deep within the forest.
From this moment of quiet mystery, the monastery took its name: Kounistra, from the Greek word for “swaying”.
What was once an untouched corner of woodland slowly became a place of devotion, shaped by a single miraculous sign that still echoes in the hearts of the island’s people.
A Sacred Path Through Nature
Reaching Kounistra is a small pilgrimage in itself.
The journey begins in Skiathos Town and leads you along winding paths wrapped in the scent of pine and earth. Birdsong guides your steps. The sea breeze brushes your shoulder. The forest seems to open gently as you walk.
Here, the path becomes part of the experience — a reminder that some destinations reveal their meaning slowly, breath by breath.
A Celebration Carried by Generations
Each year, on 21 November, Skiathos honours the Presentation of the Virgin Mary — the monastery’s feast day.
On this morning, the holy icon is carried in a solemn procession from Skiathos Town to Kounistra, following the same ancient route through the forest. Locals and visitors walk side by side, united by faith, gratitude and community.
It is one of the island’s most meaningful rituals — timeless, sincere and deeply human.

When You Arrive
Inside the monastery, calm settles over everything.
Admire the finely carved, gold-gilded iconostasis, the delicate frescoes dating from 1741 and 1805, and the open gardens where sunlight filters softly through the trees.
The atmosphere here is both humble and majestic — a place where thoughts slow, breaths deepen and silence feels like a blessing.
After the Visit
Once you’ve explored Kounistra and taken a quiet moment in the garden, you can continue toward the western beaches, such as Mikros Aselinos, or return through the forest trails for one last glimpse of sea-washed light between the pines.
Either way, you carry a part of the monastery with you —
the stillness,
the miracle,
the gentle presence of a place where faith and nature meet.
Some places do not ask to be understood.
They ask to be felt.
