Founded by Kollyvades monks from Mount Athos, the monastery was built between 1794 and 1806 and remains the only active monastery on Skiathos. Its secluded position, around five kilometres from Skiathos Town, creates a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere surrounded by nature.
The monastery also holds an important place in Greek history. In 1807, a blue-and-white flag bearing a white cross was designed, woven, blessed and raised here in connection with the revolutionary movement. Today, visitors can also explore the monastery’s museum and library, home to religious relics, manuscripts, historic objects and folklore collections.
ONE SKIATHOS EDITOR’S NOTE
We recommend Evangelistria not only for its history, but for the experience of being there. Take your time to explore the monastery, visit the museum and enjoy the sense of calm that surrounds this special corner of Skiathos.
